More than 4.5 million people visited the island province in the first seven days of October, up 9.3 percent from the same period last year. Accumulated revenues in the tourism sector totaled 6.62 billion yuan ($988 million) or 26.6 percent year-on-year growth, data from the local culture and tourism department showed.
During weekends in the resort town of Sanya there was a growth of consumers of duty-free luxury goods, especially popular were brands such as Gucci, Prada and Tiffany. Sales of duty-free goods in Hainan for the said period amounted to 1.04 billion yuan, a growth of 148.7% year-on-year. Duty-free shops there were visited by nearly 150 thousand customers. Since July 1 this year, the province raised the quota for the purchase of duty-free goods from 30,000 yuan to 100,000 yuan per person.
Three more duty-free shops are expected to be built in Sanya this year.
On July 1st, the Chinese government presented an ambitious plan to turn Hainan into a free trade port, aiming to gain global influence by the middle of the century.
