Electricity production in Bulgaria dropped by 7.67% in 2020.

Electricity production in Bulgaria dropped by 7.67 percent for the period 01.01.2020 - 31.12.2020 compared to 01.01.2019 - 31.12.2019. This shows the latest operational data of the Electricity System Operator (ESO) on the energy balance of the country for the specified period, which are published on the operator's website.
From 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020, electricity production of a volume of 40 736 953 MWh has been reported. For comparison, for this period of 2019 production amounted to 44 121 580 MWh.

Electricity consumption in the country decreased by 2.56 percent in 2020 compared to 2019 From 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020 there were 37 298 900 MWh, while for the analogous period of 2019 a consumption of 38 277 899 MWh was reported, the ESO.The data show that for the period 01.01.2020 - 31.12.2020 compared to 01.01.2019 - 31.12.2019 the balance (export-import) is negative - minus 41.17 per cent.

The participation of the base plants for the past year, compared to 2019, was negative - minus 9.63 percent. From 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020, 34 105 974 MWh of electricity was produced from base plants, while for the said period of 2019 production was 37 740 322 MWh.

For the compared period, ESO reported an increase in the participation of RES in the transmission network by 10.38 percent, as well as in the distribution network - by 5 percent. The biggest contribution to this was to wind power plants. There is a minimum increase in the share of electricity from HPP by 1.01 percent for the period 01.01.2020 - 31.12.2020 compared to 01.01.2019 - 31.12.2019, ESO data show.
