Erdogan promised a package of judicial and economic reforms last month, creating expectations for the possible release of politicians from prison and human rights defenders, including from the Kurdish community. But recent comments by the president about court rulings have intensified skepticism about his promises, BTA notes.

Speaking via video link at a ceremony in Ankara, Erdogan said Turkey is pursuing democratic reforms not because it is “forced” to do so, but because “our people deserve them”. He added that the presentation of reforms in parliament would happen quickly.
