Petkova: The competition for Belene NPP will be very serious (Obzor)

The information that the three big companies - Rosatom, Framatom and General Electric will participate together is clear proof that the competition for the Belene NPP project will be very serious. This is what Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova said after a meeting of the parliamentary committee today.
Undoubtedly, the coronavirus crisis has imposed changes not only in terms of the procedure related to the selection of a strategic investor for the Belene NPP, but also in relation to all other infrastructure projects that are developing not only in Bulgaria but also globally. You know that a large part of the activities that can be carried out in order to preserve people's lives and health have been limited. For purely objective reasons, the procedure changed its course, because purely physical participants had to access the data room for the project, which is in the National Electricity Company. Now these trips and this stay cannot be made, so it will be necessary to wait for the right moment, Petkova said. He explained that each of the five companies said they would submit a binding bid regardless of the crisis.

The information that the three large companies will participate together is clear proof that the competition for the Belene Nuclear Power Plant project will be very serious, Petkov said. According to her, the honest policy of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov contributed to this. In 2018, a decision of the parliament was assigned a mandate to the Cabinet to implement this project, but with clearly defined projects, they are related to it being implemented on a market basis, without a state guarantee or concluding contracts for long-term purchase of electrical service, she added. He reminded that the cost of the project is about 10 billion euros and that is what the participants in the project will ask. The Bulgarian state would only participate with assets.
